阅读理解一:

Like all the planets in our solar system,Earth and Mars go aroundthe sun. But Earth is closer to the sun,and ther培训啦ore revolvesalong its orbit(轨道) more quickly. Earth makes two trips around thesun in about the same amount of time that Mars takes to make onetrip. So sometimes the two planets are on opposite sides of thesun, very far apart, and other times,Earth catches up with itsneighbor and passes relatively close to it.

Since Mars and the sun appear on opposite sides of the 培训啦y,wesay that Mars is in “opposition”. Mars oppositions happen aboutevery 26 months. Every 15 or 17 years, opposition occurs within afew weeks of Mars’ perihelion(近日点).

An opposition can occur anywhere along Mars' orbit. When ithappens while the red planet is closest to the sun (called“perihelic opposition”),Mars is particularly close to Earth. IfEarth and Mars both had perfectly stable orbits, then eachperihelic opposition would bring the two planets as close as theycould be. So,with all these added factors, some bring us closertogether than others. The 2003 opposition was the closest approachin almost 60,000 years!

Mars’ orbit is more elliptical(椭圆的) than Earth’s,so thedifference between perihelion and aphelion(远日点) is greater. Overthe past centuries,Mars’ orbit has been getting more and moreelongated, carrying the planet even nearer to the sun at perihelionand even farther away at aphelion. So future perihelic oppositionswill bring Earth and Mars even closer. Our 2003 record will standuntil August 28,2287!

A Little Help from the Sun

Even though Mars doesn't always come close enough forastronomers(天文学家)to get a good look at it when Earth speeds past, scientists have an opportunity to launch a spacecraft to Mars every26 months.

Unlike vehicles in science fiction movies, spaceships don't justtake off in any direction. Escaping(避开)Earth's gravitational pullrequires a lot of energy. Even then, without an extra push, aspacecraft would never reach the orbit of Mars.

To get a spacecraft to Mars, scientists time the launch so thespacecraft reaches Mars when the red planet is on the opposite sideof the sun from Earth. This way, they take advantage of solargravity, which causes a spacecraft to “fall” toward the sun, traveling in an arc around it. This moti on follows physical lawsdescribed by Isaac Newton and Johannes Kepler in the 17thcentury.

”What you want to do is launch the spacecraft so it goes aroundthe sun to meet Mars,” says Jah. “We give it the least amount ofenergy possible and let the sun's gravity do as much as it can forus. ”

As a result, like a warrior in a Roman chariot race, thespacecraft comes up on Mars from behind. But instead of sailingpast,it slows down and lands.
